Background

Wellman Defence Ltd (WDL) is the acknowledged market leader for the supply of atmosphere management systems for submarines and surface ships.

Wellman Defence combined the expertise of Wellman CJB and the defence related expertise of Wellman Process Engineering. These companies have over 75 years experience in the design, manufacture and support of equipment for the armed forces. We provide customers with a single point of contact with the group.

Wellman CJB began as CJB Developments Limited in 1957 when it was formed as the Research Station of John Brown Engineers and Constructors Limited. in 1971 it was merged with the Special Contracts Division to build on the innovative work carried out in connection with the Royal Navy's nuclear submarines programme. The main challenge overcome for this programme was how to maintain a breathable atmosphere onboard the submarine over a period of several months without servicing or snorting.

The company became part of the Wellman Group in 1996 and its name changed to Wellman Defence Limited.

Since the early days of the UK programme, the Company has supplied the major items of air purification equipment to all the Royal Navy's nuclear-powered submarines in service or under construction.

A recent innovation is the development of texvent, a lightweight, flexible form of textile ducting. This is easy to install and has many advantages over traditional rigid systems.

In addition to its defence products, the company also supplies a range of Hydrogen purifiers for industrial applications.
